(Do We Remain True To Ourselves) In The Space Of Others
Oil on Wood, Wooden Found Objects, Light
2014
As a Javanese descent, born and raised in Singapore, I chose to visit Indonesia to further understand my personal roots and cultural history.
Travelling to Indonesia and observing how most Indonesian craftsmen utilize found objects in their creations, I used the chair and bed as a metaphor for the human body and also as a material to represent the construction of identity in a given space (geographical location).
By using wooden objects found in Indonesia and attempting to fit them into the chair or bed shaped moulds mirrors the constant struggle that i have in identifying with the Indonesia culture, its practices and beliefs.
This artwork was created for the Winston Oh Travel Award exhibition and was exhibitied at Georgetown Festival, Malaysia.
