(Do We Remain True To Ourselves) In The Space Of Others

Oil on Wood, Wooden Found Objects, Light

2014

As a Javanese descent, born and raised in Singapore, Faris visited Indonesia to further understand his personal roots and cultural history.

Travelling to Indonesia and observing how most Indonesian craftsmen utilize found objects in their creations, Faris used the chair and bed as a metaphor for the human body and also as a material to represent the construction of identity in a given space (geographical location). The use of wooden objects found in Indonesia and attempt to fit them into the chair or bed shaped molds mirrors the constant struggle of the artist in identifying with the Indonesia culture, its practices and beliefs.

This artwork was created for the Winston Oh Travel Award exhibition and was exhibited at Georgetown Festival, Malaysia.
