Emerald Canopies
Emulsion on Treated Wood
2024
Emerald Canopies is a sculptural meditation on memory, place, and belonging. Drawing visual cues from the elegant silhouettes of tropical palm trees native to Singapore, the work evokes the lush verticality and layered rhythm of foliage that once framed the artist’s everyday view. Hand-shaped and assembled with care, each element stretches upwards, mimicking the way palm fronds sway gently while reaching for the light, a gesture both grounded and aspirational.
Through this piece, the artist reflects on his deep-rooted connection to Southeast Asia and the way natural forms imprint themselves into the psyche. In a time of relocation and adaptation, Emerald Canopies becomes a quiet homage to a familiar landscape, standing as both a personal archive and a spatial anchor. The green tones echo the vibrancy of tropical life, while the architectural arrangement introduces a sense of order and stillness, bridging nature with the structured environments the artist now inhabits.
